It's just not very well-known, but it is hands-down THE best free DAW, and I can guarantee that any other DAW like FL Studio or Reaper - as close as I was to buying them - will have little to no features that Waveform Free doesn't have (as far as simpletons like us are concerned). Unless you are going professional, I cannot fathom why you wouldn't choose Traction Waveform Free. This is usually more for electronic or pop music, but so many instruments (even some orchestral ones) are for Kontakt or Kontakt Player (the free version of Kontakt), so it's worth learning about.įor a DAW! I could mention several, but ignore everyone else here. You may even consider looking a Native Instruments: Komplete Start, which includes several instruments and their free Kontakt Player (the VST plugin that plays all of their basic instruments). You could consider some like the Alpine Project (look up free VSTs). Again, anything by Big Cat Instruments can be done better with BBCSO: Discovery Edition because it's just too old and amateur. KeyZone Classic is solid if you want a few pianos.

If you are looking for a good guitar sound, by the way, Ample Guitar Lite and Ample Bass Lite are really spectacular for free sounds. Be aware that this kind of thing only works as a plugin within a DAW, and they are not currently compatible with MuseScore (but MuseScore is making plans to become part DAW to enable VST input). This all said - free stuff like this is a thousand times better than what MuseScore gives you by default (as long as it looks like it was made in the last decade). Note that you may get the price of the Discovery Edition deducted if you downloaded it before downloading this one, even if you did not pay. It's not as bombastic or cinematic as some, but I'm in love with it's sound (and it still has a really solid range of dynamics). I caved and got the Core Edition of BBCSO with a student discount, and it is BEAUTIFUL. If you really want something completely believable, you'll need to cough up some money. But, for what they do, these are THE best libraries out there.

These are free, so no true legato or any fancy articulations except for things like basic long and shorts, and some LAB instruments are a little funky like a cello ensemble that kinda specializes in suspenseful movie music, it seems.

The survey and two weeks of waiting was worth getting the latter free, but you can pay like $50 if you really want it now. My first real VST instruments were LABS and BBCSO: Discovery Edition by Spitfire Audio. They were probably revolutionary in 2002.

They together can function as VST plugins within a DAW, but they really sound clunky. When I discovered them, I was tickled because I was new to the world of electronic music production. Samplers don't really do much except play SFZs with a MIDI keyboard (in my simplified view). This includes more Sonatina instruments and ancient libraries made by people like Big Cat Instruments. There are things like samplers such as Plogue's Sforzando that can play lots of other SFZs that MuseScore can't really.

MuseScore is just too good for me to bother paying for another notation software, and no notation software is currently as capable as a lot of VST instruments that you put in a DAW. I stick to MuseScore and bear the cringy sounds for a while, and then I export the MIDI and put it in a DAW. This site has soundfonts such as that for MuseScore: You would need to do something a little funky with moving it into some MuseScore Soundfonts folder, but I think that you can figure it out. The Sonatina Symphonic soundfont is alright.
